Dental Care for Your Kids on Medi-Cal
By Ross Seymour of Free Dentist Office, a directory of dentists who take Medi-Cal, built from the state's public provider data. It is not run by any state agency.
Children on Medi-Cal get more than adults do. Check ups, cleanings, fillings, sealants, fluoride and, when a dentist says there is a health reason, braces at no cost to you.
- First visit. When the first tooth comes in, or by the first birthday
- Covered. Exams, cleanings, x rays, fillings, sealants and fluoride
- Braces. Covered when a dentist decides there is a health reason, not for looks
- Cost to you. Nothing for covered treatment
Go Earlier Than Feels Necessary
The advice is the first tooth or the first birthday, whichever comes first. That sounds absurdly early to most parents and it is still the right advice.
The early visits are not really about the teeth. They are about your child learning that this room is not frightening, and about somebody catching a problem while it is still small. A child who met a dentist at one is a different patient at seven.
Sealants Are the Quiet Win
A sealant is a thin coating painted into the grooves of the back teeth, where food gets stuck and brushing does not reach. It takes minutes, there is no drilling and nothing hurts.
They stop a lot of the decay that would otherwise turn into fillings later. They are covered. Ask for them by name, because not every office offers them without being asked.
How Braces Actually Get Decided
This one causes the most disappointment, so it is worth being straight about. Braces are covered when a dentist decides they are needed for a health reason. Teeth that are slightly crooked but working fine usually do not meet that bar.
The way in is a referral to an orthodontist who assesses your child and sends the case to the program. If it is turned down, ask why, and ask whether it is worth submitting again later. Children change and so do the answers.
If Your Child Is Frightened
Say so when you book, not when you arrive. Some offices are much better at this than others and the ones that are will give you a longer slot and a quieter time of day.
Children's dentists do this all day. On this site you can filter by type of care and find the offices listed as children's dentists, which is a better starting point than the nearest door.
Keep the Routine Going
Two visits a year is the usual advice and it is mostly about catching things early. Missing a year is not a disaster. Missing five is how a small filling becomes an extraction.
If money or transport is the reason, say that out loud to the office. It is covered care and they would rather book you than lose you.
Before You Spend a Dime
My child has no pain. Do they still need to go?
Yes. Decay does not hurt until it is deep. The point of a check up is finding it before that.
Are braces really free?
When a dentist decides there is a health reason and the program agrees, yes. Cosmetic straightening is not covered.
Can I stay in the room?
Usually. Ask when you book. Some children do better with a parent there and some do noticeably worse, and the staff will have a view worth listening to.
