What Medicaid Pays For Adults, State by State

Children on Medicaid get dental care in every state. For adults it depends on where you live. From the American Dental Association's survey of state programs, data as of August 2025.

Broad adult dental 39

Check ups, fillings, root canals and usually dentures.

Limited adult dental 6

Some care, with caps or a short list of what is paid for.

Emergencies only 5

Pain and infection. Routine care is not paid for.

No adult dental 1

Children are still covered. Adults start with a health center.

California Goes Further

18,460 California dentists are matched to the state's Denti-Cal provider list by provider number, 18,182 of them confirmed. That list also says what languages an office speaks and what kind of care it gives.

What Free Actually Means Here

Medicaid pays for dental care for every child on it, in every state, at no cost to the family. For adults it depends on the state. Some cover check ups, fillings, root canals and dentures. Some cover only emergencies, and a few cover nothing. Each state page says which, and where that comes from.

If you have no coverage, nothing here is free, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Two things still help. Many people qualify for Medicaid and have never applied. And a health center has to offer a sliding fee by income, so ask one what a visit would cost you before you rule it out.

What Is Checked and What Is Not

In California every dentist is matched to the state's own Denti-Cal provider list by provider number. In the other states, health centers are matched to the federal list of health center sites. We have not confirmed which of those offices take Medicaid, and every page says so. Call before you go.

Questions People Ask

Is the dentist really free?

For children on Medicaid, yes, in every state. For adults on Medicaid it depends on the state, and the state page says what is covered. Without coverage, no, but health centers charge by income.

I do not have Medicaid. Can I still use this?

Yes, and start with a health center or a safety net clinic. Also check whether you qualify for Medicaid, because many people who do have never applied. Each state page links to where you apply.

Which states do you cover?

All 50 states and DC. California is checked against the state Denti-Cal list. Everywhere else lists dental offices state by state, with health centers marked. Call to ask about Medicaid before you go.

Is every dentist on this list taking new patients?

No. A dentist can be in the state program and still have a full book. Call and ask. The list shows you who to call, it cannot hold a chair for you.

What does the green confirmed tag mean?

It means that dentist's provider number shows up in the state's own published list of enrolled Denti-Cal providers. Where the tag is missing, the office is still listed as taking Denti-Cal but we could not confirm it, so you should call and ask first.

Does it cost anything to be listed?

No. Nobody pays to be here and nobody can pay to rank higher.

I am a dentist and my details are wrong.

Send a correction from the page for offices and it gets fixed. You can also ask to be taken off the list.
