He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Zoology from the University of Maine, then explored various academic opportunities at institutions including Syracuse University, Cornell University, The Ohio State University, and New York University College of Dentistry. Ultimately, he found his professional home at Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine, where he earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree.
